End of Year Thoughts
It's been a while since my last post, but as this blog is meant to be a record of my journey from student to a working professional, I'd thought I'd give an update of what I've been up to so far.
First off, I've been having lots of ideas of what I want to do. Something with computers (possibly coding), writing and politics--which in itself, sounds cool. Carpe Diem and all that, I was thinking of setting up a Youtube video on political ideas. It seems like employers are now looking for any and all types of ways to gauge possible candidates who are passionate about stuff.
I've been reading this book "Poverty and Progress: Social Mobility in a Nineteenth Century City" by Stephan Thernstrom. It was published in 1964 but the findings the author discusses relays to a study from 1850-1880 concentrating on the changing social positions of workers in a small New England town.
In addition to the HTML/CSS skills that I've learned from codeacademy.com--I'm currently taking PYTHON classes. It's pretty cool. So much so, that I've filled out an application for their code academy Labs in NYC, that is a 12-week course on various programming languages and taught by a TA. It's like a ramped-up version of their free online classes and cost $250, which isn't bad...I'll know in a few weeks if I'm accepted or not. I know I should be creating more projects to keep my skills up to date. Just have to dedicate more time to doing so, which is a little difficult since I've got caught a cold and the combination of watery eyes, stuffy sinus and runny nose has me feeling achy and not really in tip-top condition. But I must persevere on.
So, on the job-front, I've actually been pretty actively searching. I joined a few list serves that has political jobs and these are way better than anything on Idealist.org or Craigslist. Check them out here
and here. I applied as a press intern for Run Warren Run , part of an organization to help Elizabeth Warren run for presidential campaign and the pay is really good, plus it's a remote position (just made the application cut-off!).
I've also applied for several political consulting companies. I'll submit more applications tomorrow. I also found one that's a political campaign start-up but they're looking for those who are familiar with coding programs, which the languages that I'm learning right now would come in pretty handy.
In closing, this year has been pretty productive. I've graduated and am hoping next year I'll have a full-time job or at least be on a path to one. I'm pretty confident by all the available positions.
